Even though the test changed, students in Lexington-Richland Five are still at the head of the class when it comes to performance on standardized tests.
The South Carolina Department of Education released results of the 2009 administration of the new Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) that replaced the 10-year-old Palmetto Achievement Challenge Tests (PACT) as the state’s accountability measurement of student achievement.
Lexington-Richland Five students had the second highest percentage of students statewide score at the Exemplary - or highest - level in the English/language arts, math and social studies portions of the test. District students were in the top five districts for students scoring Exemplary in the writing and science sections.
All elementary schools in Lexington-Richland Five are now enrolling students for kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Potential kindergarten students must be five years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2010.
Dutch Fork Elementary Donates Books
Dutch Fork Elementary fourth-grade students collected more than 600 books to donate to charity. Students brought gently used or new books from home. The books were donated to District Five's Parenting and Family Literacy Services program, and will be given to children whose families are served by the program. Home visits are made to these families twice a month and their budgets often do not allow them to purchase books for their children to keep. As a result of this service project, current and future students will be able to improve their reading skills with home practice.
Seven Oaks Hosts International Dinner
Seven Oaks Elementary hosted the District Five International Dinner on February 1. Families came together from many countries, such as Colombia, Mexico, Iraq, Pakistan, China, Taiwan, Japan, Afghanistan and Korea. After sharing delicious food, the crowd enjoyed performances by students, including a Mexican dance by the Garcia family and the Indian national anthem by Vihar Dalal. ESOL students performed "Listen to the Music all Around the World" on the drums. Parenting Educators provided activity packets for the young children and secondary students designed writing in their native languages.
